Fractures Q & A
What are stress fractures?
A stress fracture is a common type of fracture that frequently affects the feet. A stress fracture is a small crack in a bone. Stress fractures are caused by overuse and repetitive activities that put stress on the bones of your feet.
Stress fractures are most commonly seen in runners and people who participate in sports like tennis, gymnastics, and basketball. If left untreated, your stress fracture can worsen and lead to a more serious fracture.
What are the symptoms of a fracture?
Fracture symptoms include:
- Pain
- Bruising
- Swelling
- Tenderness
- Deformity
Fractures aren’t always easy to identify. If you suffer a minor fracture, you might only experience symptoms during physical activity. If your fracture is more serious, you could experience severe pain or notice an obvious deformity like a bone out of place or piercing through your skin.
If you experience a severe fracture, it’s important to seek medical attention as soon as possible to avoid further damage to your foot.
If your symptoms are interfering with your physical performance or daily activities, the team at Foot & Ankle Center of Ocala can diagnose your condition and help you find the most effective treatment.
How are fractures diagnosed?
To diagnose your fracture, Dr. Linn begins with a physical exam and a discussion of your symptoms and medical history. He then orders imaging tests like an X-ray or CT scan to identify cracks or breaks in your bone.
These imaging tests allow Dr. Linn to determine the severity of your fracture and come up with the best treatment plan.
How are fractures treated?
Treatment depends on the type and severity of the fracture you’ve suffered. If you’ve got a stress fracture, Dr. Linn might recommend rest and limited activities as your bone heals.
If your fracture is more complex like a stable or transverse fracture, Dr. Linn will probably have to realign your bone and immobilize your foot using a cast or brace. In some cases, surgery is required to realign a severely broken bone.
